prints has a lot of cons, it's harder to make, access and distribute but contrary to popular belief it has some benefits that digital doesn't. Such as the stimulation of multiple senses since it stimulates touch, site and sometimes smell which is 3 senses meanwhile digital simulates 1 which is site. plus other benefits for instance the fact that print ads be easier to avoid which makes a more pleasant reading experience

Digital magazines have many benefits for instance they're quick to produce then print, easy to access and offer many features print publications cannot. they also can add videos, links and other interactive features to enhance reader experience, but pop up ads can be harder to avoid which can negatively impact reader experience

vs

print magazines can cost considerable more to make since they need to pay for a good quality printer, paper and shipping. all those cost can add up to become quite expensive. all that expense isn't really worth it once you consider the fact that a lot of people prefer digital due to it easy accessibility and transportability. taking this into consideration it seems clear that digital would be the better option but it's not that black and white. print has some advantages for example it can reach it target audience easily since they can get their target audience attention while there shopping if there sold in stores.
Digital magazines are cheaper to produce since all you have to pay for is staff like writers and sometimes googles ads but to actually get the magazine to your audience is free. it's also easier to distribute since you can send it through email, publish it on a website or send a download link. All these methods can be achieved at the click of a bottom. it can be harder for digital magazine to reach their audience target audience since the main way they advertise is using google ads which rely on people searching a topic they have an article on..

front page

stage 1
the first thing I did was add the image of my artist I wanted to use for the magazine cover. I realised I don't actually like this image because of the way the lighting hits her face, the setting and her facial expression
stage 2
i changed the image to one I think looks better especially with a more nature filled, casual looking setting which fits the conventions of the indie genre. one issue with this image is that the background has a lot of bright colour which will make it harder to put text over. it also takes attention away from my artist. I tried adding the masthead with in darkish purple so it would be more visible but it's still not easy enough to read. the new image also has more of a DIY feel to it which is very indie.

stage 4
I started adding coverlines to the front cover. I added coverlines that would appeal to the target audience of ages 16-35. I mentioned Melanie Martinez and cavetown since those artist main demographic of ages 15-25. Melanie Martinez also has a mainly female audience which is the gender I used for my audience profile. I also have a coverline about happy fits who appeal to anyone ages 18-35 so I can catch the attention of my target audience. when making the main coverline i had trouble creating making it stand out enough, even in a different colour and bigger text it's still a bit hard to see.

stage 6
to make the coverline stand out more I decided to add an outline to each letter. I used the brush tool to draw around each letter so that it would look a bit homemade but I also made sure it wasn't messy since it's still looks like a professional magazine. the homemade look is a big part of indie hence why i thought it was best for an indie magazine

stage 3
next I tried to make the background less noticeable, to do that I first had to separate the background from the subject by duplicating the image then removing the background. I put I gradient layer inbetween the original image and the one with no background so that it looks like the background is dull but the artist still stands out. i zoomed in then used the eraser tool to get rid of some of the background that wasn't removed. the gradient went from the dark red matching the artist hair to dark blue

stage 5
it this point I noticed that the background wasn't deleted properly around the hair so I zoomed in then clean it up with eraser tool. I realised the hair sticking out is gonna look odd no matter what I try so I decided to get rid of it

stage 7
I finished the outline for the artist name and decided I liked the way it turned out. I also added an outline to the rest of the main coverline too but with a smaller outline. I made it smaller so it's less noticeable and won't draw attention away from the artist name.

double page

stage 1
i started by putting in the image I wanted to use then adjusting it to the right size. I had to cut out some of the image to make it fit better but I only had to cut out the end of the guitar. I also added a box where the columns would go. instead of making the background one solid colour i wanted to make it a gradient going from the shade of purple reflecting off the guitar to the red in the artist's hair. i used the eyedropper tool to get each colour.
stage 2
I added a slightly transparent gradient over the artist image the artist image so it matches the one for the rest of the page. the gradient going over the artist's picture is in it's own layer and that layer has a lowered opacity which makes it's slightly transparent. I also added 2 columns of the article and the title but i changed the colours yet.

stage 3
I added/finalised all the text elements for the double page spread. I realised the quote was hard to see I would have to fix that. I decided to use a light orange/pink colour which fits the indie genre since indie tends to be colourful but not always bright. I used red for the title, I got this shade of red from the artist's hair using the eyedropper tool. the quote is in light purple, i got this colour by using the eyedropper tool on the curtain.
stage 4
i realised the quote is hard to see and doesn't stand out enough. i decided to experiment with adding a shadow to the text. i did this by duplicating the text changing it's colour to black then lowering the opacity. adding a shadow doesn't just make it stand out it also gives a 3D effect.

stage 5
this is the last stage in which I'm adding the finishing touches. I added a by line in the bottom corner of the magazine to show who the article is by. but I made it small barely noticeable since it's the least important thing on the page. also added to more pictures of the artist since I had some nice close up pictures I wanted to use. I put them on ever side of artist name since I thought it would look the most natural while still being symmetrical. it also draws more attention to the artist name and looks somewhat unique.
